Well, the conference has happened, and a big thank you to all those who attended. And a big thank you to our generous hosts at Capitol Hill Baptist and 9 Marks.

The conference talks are NOW AVAILABLE in our online store on an MP3 CD. Click here to order online.

In the meantime, here are a couple of talks to whet your appetite:

Church Growth Paralysis by Phillip Jensen

Resources for Gospel Growth by Tony Payne

It's hard for pastors not to be mesmerized by church growth. Who doesn't want their congregation to grow? Who doesn't want to see numbers and budgets increasing year by year? And who isn't greatly interested when the latest growth model comes along, the latest research, the latest insight that promises us the key to such growth?

But there's growth and there's growth.

Understanding what the New Testament means by growth, and how that growth happens, sets us free. It liberates us from anxiety and self-doubt, and from the slavery of chasing the latest program.

Matthias Media, in association with 9Marks, is pleased to present ‘Gospel Growth vs Church Growth’, a conference for pastors, evangelists and ministry trainees.

At this conference, you will learn about the growth that is central to God's plan, and how that growth is achieved. But the conference will not just be about biblical ‘principles’. It will also be about the practicalities of what these principles mean for your local ministry, and about making you more effective in it.

Four key addresses by Phillip Jensen will be the foundation of our conference, with Mark Dever also contributing a valuable keynote address. Tony Payne and Phillip will also give two practical seminars, and there will be a forum with all three speakers answering questions and engaging in further exploration of the ideas.

When: Tuesday, October 30 through Thursday, November 1, 2007.

Registration begins at 2:00pm on Tuesday. Conference will conclude by noon on Thursday.

Phillip Jensen has conducted an extraordinary ministry in Sydney, Australia, over the past 30 years, planting churches, sending hundreds of young people into full-time ministry, and changing the culture of Sydney evangelicalism. By most standards, his ministry has seen extraordinary growth. And yet he would say that the secret to that growth has been ... that there is no secret.

Hear some samples of Phillip's preaching.

Praise for Phillip

I can think of no other person who can speak with greater authority on ‘Gospel growth vs. Church growth’ than Phillip Jensen, Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney. Phillip Jensen's profound understanding of the gospel and how to evangelize has for decades effected a dynamic ministry, not only in Australia but around the world. My advice is to rearrange your calendar and, by all means, attend the conference at Capitol Hill Baptist, October 30-November 1.

(Kent Hughes, General Editor, Preaching the Word commentary series)

Phillip Jensen is a rare combination of expository preacher, pastor, visionary, strategist, evangelist, church planter, and entrepreneur. He is the sort of man who wakes up with 14 fresh ideas before breakfast every day; better yet, he soon discerns that 13 of the 14 deserve to be thrown out in the trash, but sees how to bring about the 14th. He is enough of an iconoclast to get your attention, but is so committed to being faithful to the Bible that the independence of his judgment is safe-guarded by a passionate biblicism. In Australia and the United Kingdom, he is, in Christian circles, almost a household name. The record of God's hand upon him in fruitful ministry deserves to be better-known. One may disagree with him here and there, but I must add this: I would rather engage in a university mission with Phillip Jensen than with any other person on God's green earth, for he simultaneously maintains clarity on the gospel, penetrating reading of the culture, holy boldness, and genuine care for lost men and women.

(D A Carson, Research Professor of NT, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Illinois)

Phillip Jensen has been God's instrument for gospel growth in some unusual places: a previously declining church, a university ministry, and a downtown cathedral. He trusts God's word to do the hard work of changing hearts and building disciples. He does not just call for believing and preaching the Bible; he practices it in every ministry setting. He will challenge and encourage persons committed to building up God's people in God's way in a numbers-oriented compromised age.

Paul House (Associate Dean, Beeson Divinity School, Alabama)

Phillip Jensen is the closest thing we have to a modern-day reformer. With Luther-like tenacity, God is using him to stir Australia into conversation on the gospel. A trenchent preacher, an ardent evangelist, a lover of God and a planter of churches, Phillip can help you make progress in your biblical calling. I first heard him in the early 90's. I hope you make the choice to hear him now.

(David Helm, Holy Trinity Church, Chicago)

Phillip Jensen has had a remarkable ministry and continues to have it! He is fearless and doggedly determined in proclaiming a biblical pattern of church life and ministry. Under his leadership, great impetus has been given to the growth of ministry, not only in his home town of Sydney, but across both national and denominational boundaries. Under God, Phillip's energetic approach has contributed to an important growth in gospel ministry in the contemporary church. You may not agree with everything he says. But you will be challenged and encouraged by him.

(Graeme L Goldsworthy, Author, Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture and Gospel-Centered Hermeneutics)

We do not endorse these hotels, nor have we arranged any special rates with them, but they are reasonably close to the church and in safe neighborhoods.

Given the parking restrictions at CHBC (see below) and the cost of hotels in the Capitol area, you may want to consider booking a hotel near a DC Metro line. Hotels are less expensive on the outskirts and traveling to CHBC may be easier via the Metro than in a car.

Directions

You can find directions for getting to CHBC here.

Parking

Please note there is no on-site parking for the conference. The small parking lot at CHBC is rented out during the week. Also, street parking during the week is sparse, and so we do not advise assuming a space will be available.

Therefore we suggest you consider parking at the Union Station parking lot. The cost is $16/day. The lot is about a 10-15 minute walk from CHBC.

With the above considerations, we strongly encourage you to use public transport if possible.

Matthias Media is Australia's leading evangelical publisher. Founded by Phillip Jensen in 1988, we have grown to become a primary source of high quality ministry resources used in many parts of the world. In late 2006, we opened our North American office, so we are now able to provide local distribution, service and ministry support.

Our mission statement explains our goal:

To serve our Lord Jesus Christ, and the growth of his gospel throughout the world, by producing and delivering high quality, Bible-based resources.

This gospel focus shapes the sort of publishing we do. We're not interested in adding to the already monumental pile of Christian books churned out each year by the Christian publishing industry. The world needs more Christian books like it needs more websites. However, we are passionate about publishing resources that fuel, promote and support gospel growth. So our publishing criteria for any project is threefold:

Does it meet a gospel ministry need?

Is the content faithful to the Bible?

Is the quality of a high standard?

As the word of God is prayerfully proclaimed, people change. They move and grow. We call this the gospel growth process—it involves outreach, follow-up, growth and training. Everything we produce is designed to foster these four key categories of gospel ministry. For more explanation of this gospel growth process and details of our resources, visit our website:

The mission of 9Marks is to call the church to be the attractive bride of Christ—gracious and holy—that he has bought her to be. We want to do this by instructing and encouraging pastors and other church leaders in the discovery and application of the biblical principles and priorities that God has designed to cultivate and irrigate the joyful holiness that should adorn the church.

More specifically, we want to serve pastors and other church leaders by refocusing attention on the value of healthy congregations. As we do this, we want to encourage leaders to re-think the biblical nature, purpose, and leadership structures of the church, and to reconnect careful biblical theology with the kind of responsible church practice that preserves and protects the beauty of Christ's bride.
