Taureans are supposed to be practical, money-conscious and swayed
by beauty. You like the natural world, music, money and values.
It would be really nice to know what your true, essential personality
is so you can find your real self and know which direction to
go in. Astrology says your personality is determined by an influence
from the planets on your life. But what is this 'astrological
force' from the planets? It's never been detected, and astrologers
don't even pretend to know what sort of force it might be.

Gemini
You're supposed to be well-informed, witty and forever young.
And who wouldn't want to be? But when psychology tests have been
done on large numbers of people to see if their personalities
really line up with what they're supposed to be because of their
star sign, they didn't. Lots of people would like astrology to
be true and lots of tests have been done on it, but none of them
have proved that it's true.

Cancer
Cancerians are said to be house-proud, and to love their families
and homeland. So if you were born in Cancer, this should come
out in your personality profile. But when astrologers have been
tested to see if they could match personality profiles with astrological
birth-charts, they've been very unsuccessful. But at least our
astrological charts give us something we can believe in. It's
better than not knowing what to believe at all.

People with Leo signs are meant to be confident, dignified and
creative. They're supposed to have got that way because of the
influence of planets on them at the time they were born. But
why is the moment we're born so important? Why didn't the stars
influence us from the moment we were conceived?

Virgo
Virgo people are said to be good writers or teachers, and quite
health-conscious. This sounds a good thing to be, so I guess
if you wanted this kind of child you'd try to make sure they
were born in Virgo; that means, when the sun is in the same part
of the sky as the constellation Virgo. Astrology books say that's
August 24-September 23, but astronomy charts show the sun and
Virgo in different parts of the sky at that time. The position
of the stars is wrong, so if astrology is right, all the Virgos
are behaving differently to what they should be.

Libra
Librans, astrology charts say, are diplomatic and fair, and romantic
lovers. It's quite likely that someone whose sign is Libra would
agree with this. That's not just saying Libran people are conceited;
just that everybody likes to hear nice things about themselves.
It's actually a psychological fact that we're very likely to
agree with positive descriptions of ourselves, whatever the description
actually is. It's just part of human nature. So when we read
our stars we recognise ourselves in them; they usually say such
lovely, positive things.

Scorpians are said to be passionate and intense. They also have
a dark, mysterious side, which sounds very exciting. But if that's
caused by the influence of the planets, what about the new ones?
Three new planets have been discovered in the last two centuries.
Does that mean before that astrologers were all wrong? How did
they work out what the new planets were supposed to do to people's
personalities?

be good. It's so scary otherwise. We want to have something that
will give us confidence in the future, some hope that it will
turn out well. Astrology helps us feel comfortable about the
future.

is that it's supposed to tell you which other people you're compatible
with. That way you can find the right partner, and be confident
that the relationship will work. Does that mean I can treat someone
badly, because I know their star-sign is all right?

Aquarians are described as unusual, individual and unconventional.
Hearing that sort of thing is a comforting message, if you happen
to be feeling lonely or lost in the crowd. It tells you there's
nothing wrong with you; you are the way you're supposed to be.
It's a crazy world, and we want to have some comfort. So we turn
to things that will give us meaning and comfort, like astrology,
even though there's hardly any reason to believe it's true or
it works. Wouldn't it be heaps better to have a God who was real,
and true, and who we knew loved us?

People born in Pisces are said to be sensitive, imaginative and
kind. They produce works of art and can be deeply humanitarian.
But does that really help you? What if you know the person who
controls the future. What if you know that he loves you deeply
and that your future is leading to God's kingdom--and that nothing
can take that away from you? Wouldn't that be better?
