A Critical Review
To be a Christian in modern Western society is often to feel on
the defensive. We are a small minority group, whose attitudes and
beliefs are considered quaintly old-fashioned at best, harmfully
stupid at worst. We are seen as the people of 'faith', who don't
know much about life in the 'real' world.
As Christians, our perspective
is exactly the reverse. We know that we are in touch with the ultimate
reality, with God the Father himself through his Son, Jesus Christ.
We marvel at the foolish things that the world believes, follows,
worships and does. In fact, we often feel a kind of frustrated impotence
that we can't do a better job of calling the world to account. We
want to demonstrate to the world just how crazy it is to reject
God, and at how inconsistent and irrational so many of the consequences
are.

Comments from Christian leaders about
kategoria...
I am delighted with the first two issues
of 'kategoria'. If Christians are under orders from their Lord
to love him with their mind, it is important that we think clearly
and biblically about the intellectual issues that connect us with
and separate us from much contemporary thought. While Christians
must remain faithful to Scripture, Christian writers must engage
today's world, not yesterday's.
Prof. D.A.Carson
Research Professor of New Testament
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
kategoria is different. It boldly takes
on the myths of our modern/postmodern culture, asking critical,
but seldom heard, questions and often revealing vital, but little-known
facts. Its articles are well-researched, and yet very readable
and stimulating. kategoria is a great resource for "demolishing
arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the
knowledge of God.
Dr.John Woodhouse
Principal of Moore Theological College, Sydney
kategoria is a fresh, informative,
and very readable new journal designed to challenge modern prejudices
from the perspective of an informed and thoughtful Christianity.
It is succeeding. It is a valuable contribution to today's cultural
and intellectual debate. I found every part challenging and helpful,
especially the articles on deconstruction and postmodern science.
I appreciated the extended book reviews. They supply sound evaluations
of the books and alert the reader to what he or she should look
for if they are purchased.

This kategoria project can only help
us in our battle to be 'in' but not 'of' the world. We do need
to engage our society in critical discussion, pointing out the
errors and inconsistencies of the dominant worldviews, and cogently
arguing for the Christian alternative. I have no doubt that Dr
Birkett has the keenness of intellect and skills in research to
carry it off.

Anglican Archbishop of Sydney
kategoria promises to be a valuable
resource for Christian students and academics as they seek to
think intelligently and critically about their fields of study.
For the last few years, I have worked with Kirsty Birkett in developing
student ministry through the AFES National Executive. During that
time, I have been impressed by her commitment to Christ, her sharp
theological mind and her ability to apply that mind to current
issues.
